USS Reagan (2008)
In November, 2008, my son Albert invited me to join him onboard ship as the Reagan returned from service in the Persian Gulf. We spent a week at sea, returning to San Diego from Pearl Harbor. The 'Tiger Cruise' experience allowed me to spend some time with my son and meet other Navy sailors and their families. I also got to spend some time visiting with the personnel in the Reagan's Graphic Media Unit - the unit responsible for all contact with the news media and public relations activities for the ship and its Strike Force when at sea or in port. I enjoyed my visit and got to see a side of the PR profession that many students are not familiar with. So when I returned to campus, I gave a couple of presentations in my classes about what I learned. I was also asked by the local newspaper to write a story about my experiences. See the links here that will take you to the PowerPoint presentation I gave to students, the story copy I wrote for the San Luis Obispo Tribune, and the link to my YouTube page where you will find still pictures and video I took at sea.
Alaska travels (1998)
In the summer of 1998, my family and I took a summer driving trip to Alaska - 12,500 miles roundtrip. When we got home, the Shawnee (Okla.) News-Star editor asked me to share my experiences in a two part article series. PDFs of those articles are linked here. (The first of the newspaper clippings actually has the wrong date. The newspaper is dated 1998, but should be 1999 - January 16.)
